My Review

This is the fourth and final book in the Langthorne Series, and although you don’t have to have read the other three, as I didn’t, it would really be advised and there is a lot of back story missing.  The main back story is how George ended up in Prison to start with and then why he was released and allowed to work for the police again.

The story starts off with a man speaking to his wife on video phone just before someone breaks into their house and kidnaps her at gunpoint.  He then proceeds to speak with the man and tells him that in order for her safe return the man must do everything he is told to do.

The story follows George Elms, who is a Police Officer, just after he is released from prison after having all of the charges against him dropped.  George is then back on the case of a serial killer who enjoys taunting the police, and, in previous books, has killed the Police Commissioner along with other police officers who have been on the hunt for him.

The story is very engaging and I didn’t want to put it down once I started reading it.  As I have mentioned above it does help if you have read the previous books as there is a lot which is referred to which happened before.  I could work out what had happened but not how or why, which made the story a bit hard work in places.

The book is set in Langthorne, which is a made up town in the South Downs of Kent, and also features real life towns, villages and Hamlets, such as Dover, Temple Ewell and Sandgate.  The way the real and made up are intertwined makes it very good, but, as I live nearby, I did spend a lot of time trying to work out where Langthorne would be.  I have a feeling I know but wouldn’t want to ruin it for anyone.

As this is the fourth book in the series the main characters have already been introduced to us, but their back stories were all mentioned throughout the first couple of chapters so it wasn’t too confusing working out who was who and who had issues with each other.

Overall I thought the book was really gripping and all the twists and turns in the book made it a must read and un put downable book.
