 Flux (The Flux, #1)

I was just like any other twenty-two-year-old until a horrific tragedy changes everything.

When I wake up in hospital with barely a scratch, strange things start happening. At first I believe I’m being haunted by my lost loved one, until a leather-jacketed man called Hunter confronts me. Turns out the paranormal events are coming from within me, and the terrible incident has released an ability I have no control over.

And I’m not the only one.

Hunter takes me deep beneath my home city of San Francisco to become part of a secret group of people known as The Kin. Each member of The Kin has a special talent—the ability to control things with our minds. But others are onto us—men who desire to use us for their own gains.

Can I protect the people I have left, or will my powers be my downfall?

My Review

This is the first book of Marissa’s I have read so I wasn’t sure how it would go.  I received a free copy from TBC on FB so thought I would have nothing to lose with reading it as the blurb sounded really different to the kind of books I have been reading recently but something I would have read when I was younger.

The book is very definitely a young adult book, but I think adults would enjoy it as well.

The story starts with a literal bang when a girl called Ariana meets her sister at a cafe, when there is a massive explosion and she gets knocked unconscious and wakes up in hospital.  She finds that her sister was killed in the explosion and she weird things start happening around her such as light bulbs exploding when she gets excited or nervous.  It turns out that since the explosion she has unlocked a part of her brain which allows for supernatural things such as telekinesis.  She then meets up with a man called Hunter who shows her a world where lots of other people are in the same boat as her and they all suffered an horrific accident before unlocking their powers as well.

The story then moves very quickly to her moving into their caves and exploring what she is capable of.  She also has to face her own demons and evade capture.

The book slows down in the middle as we are introduced to all the main characters and the storyline is brought together before the books gets exciting in the last quarter when the story builds to an excellent conclusion.
